Britons don’t vote God!

Efforts seem afoot to push religion into the political arena in the forthcoming election. The Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor, and Tory leader Michael Howard all seem to think abortion should be an election issue. Here at Blighty we say it should not. We think that perhaps this terrible trio are mistaking Britain for America. A survey in 2003 found that 48% of people in the UK claimed to belong to a religion, compared with 86% in the US. And a mere 7.5% were actually arsed to go to church. That’s about half as many people as watch Coronation Street. Here in Blighty we don’t decide where to plant our ‘x’ based upon religious or moral issues. Now, if it was on the soaps it might be different.

“Here in Blighty we don’t decide where to plant our ‘x’ based upon religious or moral issues. Now, if it was on the soaps it might be different.”

That sounds more like an indictment than something to be proud of.

Fact is here in Blighty issues of personal faith do not decide elections but issues to do with social morality like abortion and immigration and attitude to the poor should play a big part is helping us decide who we want forming our government. That list of course is not exclusive. The NHS, policing, dealing with antisocial behaviour, education, the economy, etc are all extremely important.
Much as we might ridicule the American electorate we must not forget that they are not quite as alienated from the political process as we are in the UK. We should applaud those people who use the issues that matter to them when deciding how to vote.
